Abstract – Roadmap to HIPAA 5010
The countdown for the HIPAA 5010 implementation has
started. Health and Human Services (HHS), released a mandate in
January 2009, that most healthcare organizations have until
January 1, 2012, to meet both the 5010 standards and the
associated National Council for Prescription Drug Programs
version D.0, which replaces the current version 5.1. The ICD-10
compliance date now is set for October 1, 2013. As the CMS
officials say - the new standards will include more than 500
change requests, resolve contradictions and ambiguities in the
existing rules, and make the whole system more consistent.
The standards has put forth an upgrade challenge to the
organizations. Implementing revised HIPAA 5010 standards and
ICD-10 codes could potentially have the largest impact on the
health care industry since the Y2K.
